Majors  >  Early Childhood Education

Preparing students to become effective teachers of young children is the goal of the Early Childhood Education degree. Offered through the Division of Education and Speech Language Pathology, courses are designed to meet the certification requirements and standards of the Oklahoma State Department of Education, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Oklahoma Commission for Teacher Preparation (OCTP). The program is accredited both state and nationally.

Students who complete this program are qualified to obtain an Oklahoma teaching certificate in early childhood education to teach pre-kindergarten through third grade. Since USAO is accredited by NCATE, certification for other states is possible.

Students study human relationships, have opportunities for observation and participation in child development and guidance, curriculum and program planning and methods of teaching.

Early Childhood teacher candidates have experiences with young children both in public school settings and the USAO Child Development Center, an on-campus preschool. The experiences combine to provide a real-world laboratory for teaching and learning.

The curriculum includes course work from the liberal arts, professional education and early childhood areas. This broad-based, interdisciplinary curriculum enables the teacher candidate to develop a wide range of knowledge and skills that prepares him or her to be an effective educator.

All requirements for teacher certification programs are subject to change if new requirements are established by the Oklahoma State Board of Education, the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education or the Oklahoma Commission for Teacher Preparation.
