CHICKASHA – The Drovers opened conference play on Friday afternoon at Bill Smith Ballpark, taking both games from the Wayland Baptist Pioneers.
The Drovers, who start the season 19-3, will finish their series against the Pioneers at home for a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
Friday’s first game was a pitching battle, which the Drovers won 1-0. Blake McMullen (6-0) threw nine strikeouts in his seven-inning complete game shutout. He allowed just two hits and no walks for the game.
Pioneer pitcher Tom Bailey, who also threw the complete game, allowed just three hits.
The Drovers lone run came off two fourth-inning hits. First, Brian Vigo hit a single, followed by Chance Hill’s RBI double to center field, scoring Vigo.
The Drovers found their place at the plate in game two, scoring eight runs while giving up just one.
Wayland Baptist struck first in the game, grabbing their only run in the first inning.
In the bottom of the second inning the Drovers got on the board with a solo homer by Zach Gonzalez.
Later in the inning, catcher Owen Adams hit a double deep into left center, scoring Hill and right fielder Blake Pruett. The next batter, Robert Summers, hit to right field to score Hayden George, who courtesy ran for Adams.
In the next inning, Heath Wilda scored as Hill reached first on an error.
The Drovers grabbed two more in the fourth inning. First, Wilda made contact with the ball, reaching first on a fielder’s choice. The fielders had attempted to out Jared Coon, who was moving from second to third, but made an error and Coon arrived safely on base. The action allowed Summers to score from third.
Gonzalez then hit into a double play, which took out himself and Wilda, but allowed Coon to score.
USAO’s final run game in the sixth inning from Summers. He earned his spot on base with a single, advancing the bases on a passed ball and sacrifice fly by Wilda, then scoring off a wild pitch.
David Garcia (6-0) pitched the complete game, also allowing just two hits and no earned runs. He struck out eight batters.
