If it wasn’t for the education I received at USAO, I wouldn’t be where I am today. The education I received prepared me not just for medical school, but also for life outside of school.

The journey for J.C. (Benda) Evans, M.D., is just beginning as the 2010 USAO graduate starts her first year of residency in Emergency Medicine at San Antonio Military Medical Center, one of the most competitive residencies in the U.S. Air Force.

“If it wasn’t for the education I received at USAO, I wouldn’t be where I am today. The education I received prepared me not just for medical school, but also for life outside of school,” Evans said. “The science program is especially strong and has produced many physicians, physician assistants, nurses, lab techs and other healthcare professionals.”

Evans graduated summa cum laude from USAO with a perfect 4.0 GPA and earned the Alumni Association’s Distinguished Graduate Award, which is given to one student each graduation.

After USAO, she attended the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, earning her doctorate of medicine in 2014.

“The professors at USAO are extremely knowledgeable in their field and were always helpful, regardless of what your major was,” she said. “Due to USAO’s smaller class sizes, it allowed for the professors to take a more active role in your education and actually get to know you as a person.”

As a student, Evans was active in numerous organizations and charities outside the classroom. She said USAO taught her to interact with the community, to give back and to be as active as possible.

“My education was well-rounded, especially thanks to the curriculum and different opportunities to volunteer and participate in activities around the campus,” she said. “The volunteer and extracurricular activities at USAO are boundless.”
