Johnson joins ranks with Drover basketball

CHICKASHA – Familiar with the Sooner Athletic Conference and NAIA women’s basketball, Leandra Johnson is excited to begin her first assistant coaching position with the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma.

“She’s young at heart and spirit so I think she’ll really relate to the players well,” head coach Laci Tompkins said. “But she just has a poise and professionalism about her that is very exceptional.”

A Look Back: The Beginning of Drover Basketball

CHICKASHA – The USAO basketball program came from humble beginnings as players donned another team’s uniforms in their first ever game, as Athletic Director and Head Coach Brisco McPherson remembers.

McPherson was a member of the first basketball team at USAO in 1973 and has been associated with the program ever since.

Martin named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete

CHICKASHA – After an entire college career of proving himself both on the mound and in the classroom, Caleb Martin was named a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete.

He is the third Drover baseball player ever to receive this honor.

Martin, now a business administration graduate, pitched four seasons for the Drovers, grabbing several career pitching records at USAO.

Two Drovers earn national academic honors

CHICKASHA – Two well-rounded Drover softball seniors were honored nationally this week for strong performances both on the field and in the classroom.

Center fielder Christina Wilson and right fielder Ashley Sanders were named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes.

Ashley Sanders
Sanders, a physical education senior, completed her second season with the USAO softball team. She is out of eligibility to play, however, after playing two seasons of basketball at Blue Mountain Community College.

Drovers beef up roster with seven recruits

With the new school year beginning, seven new students will be joining the Drover ranks of the USAO men’s basketball team.

Assistant coach Vinson Metcalf said he thinks the crop of recruits immediately will contribute positively to the team.

“We are very excited about every one of them because we think they are going to come in and make a immediate impact on our program,” Metcalf said. “We have eight returning players, so to get these type players coming in to go with these guys already in the system, we are very excited about this upcoming year.”

In the Saddle – Coach Matt Hibbitts and Ashley Sanders

CHICKASHA – The USAO baseball and softball teams look back at the now-completed 2011 season with pride. Both teams battled in every game throughout the season to meet their goal to reach the SAC tournament.

“All in all, it was a winning season, and the guys worked real hard all year to get where we wanted to go and that’s all you can really ask for,” Assistant Baseball Coach Matt Hibbitts said of the baseball team.
