Softball finishes tournament with a win

CHICKASHA — The Drover softball team grabbed a fourth win in the Festival in February tournament in Chickasha with a 7-2 victory over Sterling College.

In the Saturday game, the Drovers struck first with runs by Chelsea Zuchnik, Katie Jirak, Ashley Mitchell and Liz Agpalo.

Jirak had a second run in the next inning, followed by USAO’s next two batters — Skyler Nichols and Markie LaFerney.

Neesha Sorrell pitched the entire seven innings, throwing 10 strikeouts.

USAO Softball wins three in tourney

CHICKASHA – On Friday afternoon, the Drovers hosted the first day of their second annual Festival in February softball tournament at the Chickasha Sports Complex — and they claimed three more victories.

Facing McPherson College twice and Sterling College once, the Drovers went 3-0 on the day. Lubbock Christian, a SAC team the Drovers faced twice Thursday, is the other team participating in the tournament.

No. 7 Lady Chaps outrun the Drovers

CHICKASHA – The Lubbock Christian Lady Chaps proved their No. 7 preseason ranking with two wins over the Drovers on Thursday afternoon at Bill Smith Ballpark.

USAO struggled against the Chaps in game 1 and fell in game two despite a late rally.

Second baseman Skyler Nichols scored USAO’s lone run in the first game off an RBI by Kristin Moyers. The Drovers fell 7-1.

Nichols started game two with a run in the first inning off an RBI again from Moyers. But after giving up four runs, the Drovers found themselves in the bottom of the seventh down by three.

CHICKASHA – The focus for this last week of the 2011-12 USAO women’s basketball team, sophomore Natalie Colton says, is defense.

“If we can just be working these last couple practices on defense that’s going to be good,” she said. “It seems like we’re moving forward, even though it’s the end of the season.”

Colton has been a versatile player all season, playing both the point guard and post positions. At 5-foot-11, she might be a bit tall for a point guard, but as a late bloomer, Colton describes her conversion to post.

Baseball sweeps Bethany Swedes

CHICKASHA – In a two game series, the Drovers outscored the Bethany Swedes 29-9 on Tuesday afternoon at Bill Smith Ballpark.

In game one, USAO fell behind 5-0 but turned the game around in the bottom of the third with four runs.

The Drovers were tied at seven when left fielder Jared Coon hit a grand slam to put the Drovers in the lead for the first time all game. That inning, the Drovers went on to score 12 runs and won 19-8.
