CHICKASHA – Three Drover starters were named 2012 Sooner Athletic Baseball All-Conference after strong performances in the field and at the plate this season.
Third baseman Heath Wilda and outfielder Jared Coon were named All-Conference First Team while first baseman Zach Gonzalez took home All-Conference Second Team honors.
Jared Coon Coon, a junior from McNeese State, led the Drovers in almost every batting category this season. Starting in every game, Coon is the only Drover to end the season with a batting average above 0.400.
SHAWNEE – For the second day in a row, the Drovers played nine innings and scored 10 runs, but it wasn’t enough to earn the win in the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament.
Taking on Saint Gregory’s in the Drovers’ final game of the tournament, shortstop Konrad Mueller hit a grand slam in the bottom of the second to put the Drovers in the lead for the first time in the game.
USAO entered the bottom of the ninth trailing 15-8. Chance Hill started a late rally with a two-run homer, also scoring Brandon Jewett, but USAO couldn’t recover the entire deficit and fell 15-10.
SHAWNEE – Despite a strong first five innings, the Drovers couldn’t overtake the No. 8 Oklahoma Baptist Bison in the second game of the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament.
The game was close up until a tough sixth inning propelled the Bison into a large lead.
The Bison were able to score first with three in the bottom of the third, and the Drovers responded with a run in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Brian Vigo tripled to deep center field to score Zach Gonzalez from first base.
CHICKASHA – Looking back on the 2012 regular season, Drover baseball assistant coach Matt Hibbitts said despite a slow start, it’s been a fun season to watch develop.
“We were a little bit disappointed about how things started out. But the last 22 games, I think we went 16-6, which is a really good comeback,” he said. “We’re pretty happy with it and excited to get ready for the conference tournament.”
