USAO Seeks High School Artists for ‘Innovations’ Contest

CHICKASHA – Cash prizes, public exhibition and multiple awards are up for grabs for the winners of next year’s Innovations high school art competition at the University of Science and Arts. The liberal arts university is announcing registration for the annual art contest at the end of February.

Chancellor Johnson Tells USAO Grads: ‘Dream, Work, Give’

CHICKASHA -- Urging graduates to dream big, work hard and give charitably, Oklahoma’s new chancellor of higher education addressed an overflow crowd at fall commencement ceremonies on Friday night at the University of Science and Arts.

Dr. Glen Johnson addressed 80 graduates and their families in Te Ata Memorial Auditorium on a stage decked in poinsettias and lighted fresh pine boughs. More than 1,300 guests saw the event on campus and the ceremony was televised on the USAO Channel.

USAO Alumna Patricia Morgan Awarded OVAC Grant

CHICKASHA – Chickasha artist Patricia Morgan recently was selected by the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition to receive a Professional Basics Grant. Morgan, an alumna from the University of Science and Arts, said she will use the grant funds to cover costs associated with the photo processing of her new body of work, which she will exhibit at the USAO Art Gallery Feb. 18-March 16, 2007.

Inspired by the land’s pattern, texture and color, Morgan said she plans to compose oil paintings, which sometimes combine locations or distort the horizon.

Pulitzer Prize Winning Author to Visit USAO April 10

CHICKASHA – An author of Pulitzer proportions is planning to visit the University of Science and Arts on April 10, 2007. As part of the Emerson-Wier Liberal Arts Symposium, special guest author Dr. Jared Diamond will address students, faculty, staff and community members in a public forum about past civilizations and implications for current and future ones.

Lewis and Clark Presentations December 7

Carving a canoe out of a tree are USAO students from the Return of Lewis and Clark class. The students are presenting life on the frontier through the eyes of early American travelers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on Dec. 7 from 1-2:30 p.m. The annual Lewis and Clark exhibit, held in Nash Library on 17th Street, includes several presentations, such as tipi making, Native American jewelry and the final version of this handmade canoe. The presentation is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided.

USAO Class Takes Historical Lewis and Clark Trek

CHICKASHA – Historical sojourners Lewis and Clark are making a Chickasha appearance in the form of a special presentation Dec. 7 at the University of Science and Arts. From 1-2:30 p.m., the public is invited to take part in the free festivities in Nash Library on 17th Street.

Dr. Nancy Osborn, associate professor of physical education, teaches the Return of Lewis and Clark class that puts on the production each year.

Oklahoma Hall of Famer Glen Johnson to Address USAO Fall Commencement

CHICKASHA – More than 80 seniors are scheduled to walk the stage Dec. 8 as Dr. Glen Johnson, president of Southeastern Oklahoma State University, addresses the fall 2006 commencement at the University of Science and Arts. The commencement begins at 8 p.m. in the Te Ata Memorial Auditorium.

In November, Johnson was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame. Throughout his career, Johnson has played major roles in Oklahoma’s political and higher education systems.

Three USAO Students Compete in Rule-Breaking Statewide Photo Contest

CHICKASHA – Three students from the University of Science and Arts recently proved they have what it takes to compete with Oklahoma’s best young photographers – and break all the rules of photography while doing it.

ShowBand Concert Set for December 1

Grammy award-winning country singer Jody Miller will share the stage with the USAO ShowBand for a blow-out concert Dec. 1. The ShowBand is known statewide for combining Motown hits with pop and jazz favorites. Special guests include pianist Ukie Hart and country trumpeter Mike Moore. The free concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Te Ata Memorial Auditorium and is open to the public.

Sigma Tau Delta Honors Nine USAO Students

CHICKASHA – Nine students recently were inducted into Sigma Tau Delta, a national English Honor Society that made its debut on the University of Science and Arts campus in October.

The formation of the honor society’s new USAO chapter was initiated by several English students. Pocasset English junior Kily Richardson-Keeling contacted the national Sigma Tau Delta organization and instigated the chartering process.
