CHICKASHA – In the spirit of the upcoming season, the University of Science and Arts Concert Choir is presenting its annual Christmas concert Nov. 16. The 7:30 p.m. performance in the USAO Alumni Chapel features holiday favorites, hymns and even a handbell choir, percussion and an instrumental ensemble.
The concert is free and open to the public.
Dr. Jan Hanson, professor of music and director of the Concert Choir, said the concert offers a large variety of seasonal music.
USAO’s Opera Scenes class will take viewers on a journey through space, science and liverwurst in the imaginative and humorous children’s opera, “The Quantum Fieldtrip” Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m. More than 300 local elementary students will review the original opera on Nov. 9 at 1 p.m. in the Te Ata Memorial Auditorium. The family-friendly performances are free and open to the public.
CHICKASHA – At a recent awards luncheon attended by faculty and family members, 17 students were inducted into the Hypatia Honor Society at the University of Science and Arts. The Nov. 2 initiation featured comments by current Hypatia officers, as well as USAO administration.
Dr. Nancy Warden, professor of mathematics and chairman of the Hypatia committee, said she enjoys spotlighting the selected students.
CHICKASHA – As part of the Oklahoma Commission on Teacher Preparation, the University of Science and Arts will host its annual teacher education forum Nov. 15. The 4 p.m. meeting will be held in the Gary Hall lounge on the corner of 17th Street and Alabama.
CHICKASHA – What do an international business leader, an urban renewal expert and a prizefighter have in common? Each has earned high honors from the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma.
Three graduates were honored Nov. 4 at USAO as part of the annual Alumni Homecoming activities. During an afternoon awards banquet, USAO named 1956 Oklahoma College for Women (OCW) alums Ann Marie Hooper Harrison and Betty Remy Burns into its Hall of Fame. In addition, Oisin Fagan, class of 2003, received a Young Alumni Award.
CHICKASHA – Writing an opera may not sound like rocket science, but for a handful of writers at the University of Science and Arts, the opposite is true. “The Quantum Fieldtrip” is an original educational opera about science and space written by two USAO staff members and an alumna. The cosmic opera debuts Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m. with a free performance in the Te Ata Memorial Auditorium.
Ceramic pottery and oil landscape paintings currently line the walls of the USAO Art Gallery in Davis Hall. As part of the annual USAO Homecoming, Nov. 3-5, two alums have teamed up to display their original artwork in the gallery. Sculptor Mary Ellen Thomas, class of 1976, displays her stoneware and pottery alongside painter Brandon Wood, class of 2003. A special closing reception is being held Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. during which visitors can meet the artists.
Three USAO art seniors have joined forces to display “Smoke,” an exhibit featuring ceramics and photography in the Davis Hall Third Floor Art Gallery. The artists will be on hand Nov. 4 at 2:30 p.m. for a special public reception with refreshments. CHICKASHA – The pre-law chapter of Phi Alpha Delta is hosting a law symposium Nov. 2 at the University of Science and Arts. The event starts at 5 p.m. in the Davis Hall Amphitheater, room 224.
The event is designed to help promote continuing education programs for undergraduates interested in studying law. Special guest speakers from the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma City University law schools will speak about their experiences and law school application considerations. Topics also include preparation for the Law School Admissions Test.
CHICKASHA – Sixteen college seniors are being inducted into the top honor society at the University of Science and Arts. The new Hypatia Honor Society initiates will be recognized Nov. 2 at a special luncheon highlighting the academic accomplishes of the elite group.
