Funny. Outlandish. Edgy. The hit Broadway musical comedy “Pippin” opens on Thursday, March 2, at the University of Science and Arts. The show is a production of the USAO Drama Department under guest Director Dion Stover. An internationally known artist, Mark Statsz of Bellvue, Idaho, will present his work as the first of three artists under consideration in the USAO Public Art Project this spring.

The first presentation is scheduled at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, in the Davis Hall Theater at USAO. Stasz will present his proposal for the public art sculpture to be erected in the Alumni Walk of Fame in front of the USAO Nash Library.

CHICKASHA – An art show featuring the work of faculty from another Oklahoma institution will open Sunday at 4 p.m. at the University of Science and Arts.

The public is invited to a reception at the USAO Art Gallery in Davis Hall to meet the artists and learn more about their unique creations.

Students will pay more for housing and meals – less than 5 percent more – this fall at the University of Science and Arts, but rates will stay below most other colleges with new or refurbished housing, under new room and board plans approved by the USAO Board of Regents on Tuesday.

The price of a four-bedroom apartment in Lawson court will be $1,805, which is $85 more for the standard fall-spring school year. In Sparks Hall, a more traditional residence hall environment, the fall-spring combined rate is $1,145, or $55 more.

CHICKASHA – Two local elementary schools are among the many who already plan to attend a free master class given by musical performers Trio Tulsa at noon on Feb. 28 in the University of Science and Arts’ Alumni Chapel.

Later that day, the group will perform the final concert in this season’s Davis-Waldorf Performing Arts Series. The group has earned regional, national and international acclaim throughout its 18-year history.

Students found a welcome new convenience when they returned to campus this spring at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma – the broadest access to Internet services available on any college campus in Oklahoma. Better yet, it’s free.

USAO became the first Oklahoma school to “go totally wireless,” a term meaning that students, faculty and guests with laptop and handheld computers can surf the Internet from anywhere on campus – even outdoors or in the middle of the campus oval.

CHICKASHA - Seventeen students from the University of Science and Arts were inducted recently into the Hypatia Honor Society – the school’s only campus wide honor society.

The Hypatia Honor Society was founded in 1923 to honor students for their high academic achievements, character and integrity, and service to the university and community. The honor society was named after Hypatia, the famous Greek female mathematician.

Actors across Oklahoma and the nation are invited to audition for the world premiere of Te Ata, A Play With Music. The groundbreaking production, set to debut in the fall, showcases the life of world-renowned storyteller and actress Te Ata Thompson Fisher (1895-1995).

Playwright and artistic director JudyLee Oliva sees the world premiere as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Oklahoma actors to audition for the production slated for national audiences.

CHICKASHA – Original paintings by artist Corazon S. Watkins are on display in a new exhibit that continues through Feb. 10 at the USAO Art Gallery. The event is free and open to the public weekdays from 9-4 in Davis Hall.

Watkins’ paintings have been featured in exhibitions or held in collections across America and in Austria, Spain, United Arab Emirates, The Philippines, and Costa Rica.

As part of Monday’s Martin Luther King Day festivities, Rev. Carey Casey, president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Foundation and an original character in the movie Remember the Titans, will speak at 7 p.m. in the University of Science and Arts’ Davis Hall Theater.

Admission is free to hear the well-known motivational speaker, lecturer, pastor and coalition builder who works to bring about positive change in the areas of religion, civil rights history and racial reconciliation.
