USAO Reaches Out to Hurricane Victims

CHICKASHA -- Energized by gripping media pictures of hurricane victims, and with memories still vivid of Oklahoma’s weather tragedies, three key campus leadership groups at USAO -- faculty, staff and student associations -- have joined to raise money and support for victims of hurricane Katrina.

A $250 gift from the USAO Staff Association started the ball rolling on Thursday, as various student organizations joined the campaign to help hurricane victims. Students and faculty from USAO wanted to do more than just donate cash gifts, though.

USAO NAMED NO. 1 IN THE WEST, AMONG BEST DEALS IN AMERICA

CHICKASHA – “Best in the West!” is the celebration cry echoing from campus this week as USAO has been named – for the fifth time -- the No. 1 undergraduate public college in the Western United States by U.S. News and World Report’s America’s Best Colleges. Again, that makes USAO the highest-ranked public college in Oklahoma in the annual rankings by America’s Best Colleges.

THE UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND ARTS OF OKLAHOMA

The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma is seeking an artist to create a permanent, large-scale piece of sculpture. The college will take a broad approach to selecting the artist and is open to all sculpture media sustainable for long-term public display.

Roddy: ‘Hard Work Brings Sweet Rewards‘

“Set goals, stay focused and be prepared.” Commencement speaker Gretchen Roddy outlined her own keys to success on Friday night, reinforcing each as she addressed graduates and their families at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma.

Roddy is the newly elected chair of the USAO Board of Regents, which governs Oklahoma’s public liberal arts college.

She encouraged graduates first to set goals, a common practice of the world’s most successful people.

KNAPP FEATURED IN IAO EXHIBITION

Artist Jacquelyn Knapp of Chickasha has scored another regional show. Her work was featured this summer in a traveling exhibition, 24 Works on Paper, that toured Oklahoma.

For the last ten months, different styles of art traveled around Oklahoma from one art gallery to the next. Featuring some of Oklahoma’s best artists, 24 Works On Paper is an outreach program of Individual Artist’s of Oklahoma (IAO). The purpose of this program is to provide quality contemporary art to communities, which normally have limited access.

2 STUDENTS JOIN FOR ART EXHIBITION

Two artists – both accomplished in other endeavors – will join their best efforts to produce a new art exhibition entitled “LA LA,” which is open now through Sept. 25 at USAO.

Students Laura Parker and Lacey Nowell have put together a senior art show to showcase their graphic designs focusing on things from nature to personal nostalgia. Both have completed the bachelor of fine arts degree this summer at USAO.

Roddy to Address USAO Commencement

USAO Regent Gretchen Roddy is scheduled to address 43 graduates and their families on Aug. 5 during summer commencement ceremonies at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. The ceremony begins at 8 p.m. inside Troutt Hall Auditorium, and will be broadcast live on USAO Channel 18.

Roddy is the newly elected chair of the USAO Board of Regents, which governs Oklahoma’s public liberal arts college. She was appointed to the board in 2001 by Gov. Frank Keating.
