Trick-or-Treaters Visit USAO

Costume-clad children joined USAO staff members for a trick-or-treating tour of the USAO campus Oct. 31. Every Halloween, children from the university’s Child Development Center visit offices on campus to collect treats from staff and faculty members.

Boxer Knocks Out Top Award for USAO Young Alumni

CHICKASHA – Irish boxing champ Oisin Fagan of Oklahoma City is adding another award to his list of accomplishments. The newly named Light-Welterweight Champion of Ireland is being named as this year’s Young Alum at the University of Science and Arts.

In an honors banquet featuring two 1956 Oklahoma College for Women graduates, Fagan will be honored as part of the annual USAO Alumni Homecoming Nov. 3-5.

Dr. J.C. Casey, professor of communication, supported Fagan’s nomination for the award.

Egypt Businesswoman, CEO Joins USAO Hall of Fame

CHICKASHA – International business CEO Ann Marie Hooper Harrison may have had humble beginnings as a singer at the Oklahoma College for Women (OCW), but today, she is the only foreign woman to head a major corporation in Egypt.

The chair of Egypt-based International Business Associates is being inducted into the University of Science and Arts Hall of Fame Nov. 3-5 during the annual Homecoming activities.

Following her marriage to William Harrison, the couple moved to Cairo, Egypt when William accepted a senior position with the Ford Foundation in 1966.

Honors Recital Features Arias, Showtunes, Jazz

CHICKASHA – With the fall semester in full swing, the University of Science and Arts is showcasing a host of student vocalists, pianists and instrumentalists. The USAO music department will present a free Student Honors recital Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Alumni Chapel.

Dr. Stephen Weber, associate professor and coordinator of music, said the concert spotlights some of the university’s best singers and musicians.

Betty Burns Named to USAO Hall of Fame

CHICKASHA – A music scholar turned urban housing revivalist in Cincinnati is being honored by the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. Betty Remy Burns, Oklahoma College for Women class of 1956, will be inducted into the USAO Alumni Hall of Fame as part of the annual Homecoming activities planned Nov. 3-5.

Originally from Ft. Cobb, Burns received training in piano and music theory. When she married in 1960, she joined her husband, Gerry, in Cincinnati and began revitalizing homes in their neighborhood in the late 1960s.

High School Singers Invade Chickasha

CHICKASHA – Nearly 700 high school students are scheduled to descend upon the University of Science and Arts campus Oct. 28. The university will play host to the Oklahoma Music Educator’s Association All-State Choir regional auditions, an event drawing high schools in the Chickasha, Norman, Moore, Lawton and Duncan areas.

High school students from across the southwest region of Oklahoma will compete for the chance to join the OMEA All-State Choir, which will rehearse and perform at the OMEA annual convention in Tulsa next January.

Music Professor Recognized for Public Performances of Original Works

CHICKASHA – Dr. Stephen Weber could easily be called one of the most published composers around, and not without good reason. The University of Science and Arts associate music professor recently won his 12th consecutive award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).

The nationally-recognized performance rights organization keeps records of public performances of composers who have registered original works with them and, in Weber’s case, awards them each year accordingly.

'The Man Who Came to Dinner' Opens October 27

USAO is debuting its first major theatre production of the schoolyear with “The Man Who Came to Dinner.” The Broadway comedy runs Oct. 27 and 28 at 8 p.m. in the Davis Hall Little Theatre with a 2 p.m. matinee on Oct. 29. Tickets at the door are $5 for adults and $2 for high school students 18 and under. USAO students, faculty and staff get in free with a USAO ID. Art Seniors Show Photographs, Ceramics in ‘Smoke’

CHICKASHA – Three local women are using art to preserve life, one moment at a time. The bachelor of fine arts seniors will display their unique photographic and ceramic pieces Oct. 25 through Thanksgiving at the University of Science and Arts.

The Davis Hall Third Floor Art Gallery will play a temporary home to the seniors’ original artwork in an exhibit entitled, “Smoke.” The public is invited to attend a free reception Nov. 4 from 2:30 - 5 p.m. during which they can meet the artists and partake of refreshments.

Alumni Art Show Features Paintings, Stoneware

CHICKASHA – In conjunction with its annual Alumni Homecoming, the University of Science and Arts is hosting a gala exhibition featuring the artwork of two alumni artists. Beginning Oct. 23, USAO alumna Mary Ellen Thomas will collaborate with alumnus Brandon Wood in their joint exhibit on display at the USAO Art Gallery.

The art exhibit runs through Nov. 4. As part of the Homecoming festivities, the art gallery will host a public reception that day at 2 p.m. during which visitors can meet the artists.
