CHICKASHA – Every star has a starting point. For New York City opera tenor Steven Sanders, that place is Chickasha. The up-and-coming singer may earn a new appreciation for “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” when he sings it live Dec. 19 at the University of Science and Arts during a festive Christmas concert open to the public.

CHICKASHA – How does one honor an English professor of 40 years? With poetry, of course. Stuart Meltzer, faculty emeritus in languages and literature, is receiving a unique tribute in the form of “Mr. Flood’s Party,” a combination of live poetry reading, drama and discussion Dec. 1 at the University of Science and Arts.

CHICKASHA – Top high school seniors are the targets of a new partnership that will generate $400,000 in new scholarship funds at the University of Science and Arts over four years, beginning next fall.  The USAO Foundation announced its new Foundation Scholars Awards program on Monday, the most aggressive and expansive scholarship program ever at USAO.

CHICKASHA – Pop, blues, big band and lounge music converge when the USAO ShowBand whips up a lively mix of songs for its annual fall concert Nov. 30. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Te Ata Memorial Auditorium.

CHICKASHA – The University of Science and Arts knows about music … and all that jazz. Its newest music group, the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, brings a combination of festive and popular tunes Nov. 27 in the USAO Alumni Chapel, all performed with jazz style. The free concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and is open to the public.

CHICKASHA – When the Oklahoma State Arts Council came knocking, Steve Brown was quick to answer with a resounding “yes.” The USAO professor of art recently was asked to display three original works in the new Oklahoma Centennial Art Collection Exhibition at the Oklahoma State Capitol.

CHICKASHA – The USAO Art Gallery has announced the winners in its 2007 Seven-State Biennial Exhibition, an exhibit drawing artwork from Oklahoma and six surrounding states. The art exhibit remains on display at the University of Science and Arts Gallery through Dec. 7.

CHICKASHA – Why wait until December to celebrate Christmas? The USAO Concert Choir is getting a jump on the holiday season with a special performance Nov. 13 at the University of Science and Arts. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the USAO Alumni Chapel.

The concert is free and open to the public.

CHICKASHA – Local residents in need of musical entertainment need look no further than the University of Science and Arts. On Nov. 12, the USAO Concert Band and Key Players will rock the house during an evening filled with live, energetic music.

The free concert, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Te Ata Memorial Auditorium, features marches, classical music, Beatles songs and more.
