Regents Approve Green Energy Lab, Housing and Food Rates

A new lab that gives students hands-on experience with alternative energy sources is under construction this summer at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. The USAO Board of Regents approved this faculty-designed project when they met recently on campus to consider a range of issues including campus housing and food contract rates and personnel matters.

Coponiti Honored for Service

Laura Coponiti, assistant director of financial aid at USAO, recently received statewide recognition for her work in the profession of financial aid with the OASFAA Distinguished Service Award.

Coponiti was honored during the Spring Conference of the Oklahoma Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. Andrew Hammontree, president of OASFAA, presented the award.

Cuban Art, Food and Culture Subject of Art Show Reception

The vibrant, colorful Cuban art that is on display in the USAO Art Gallery will be moving out soon, but not without a closing reception featuring authentic Cuban food and a special lecture by award winning journalist, author, columnist and editor María de Lourdes Ruiz Scaperlanda.

The closing reception of "Cuba Oriente" is scheduled May 27 at 7 p.m. in the Davis Hall Amphitheater on the USAO campus. The art and food will follow the lecture by Scaperlanda.

Psychology Students Present Research at State Conference

Psychology students at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma recently had a chance to compete against 10 other schools and approximately 100 undergraduate and graduate students during the 27th Annual Oklahoma Psychological Society Research Conference. Ashley Hyde, a psychology major from Altus, placed in the top five for undergraduate research posters.

It's Not Too Late to See Cuba Art Show

"Untitled" by Yendi Tomás Estrada Cancino is one of the many portraits of Cuban life through its art on display at the University of Science and Arts. "Cuba Oriente" continues through May 30 in the USAO Art Gallery. The Gallery is located on the first floor of Davis Hall on the USAO campus. "The exhibition features vibrant works from what is often described as the heartland of Cuban culture," said Layne Thrift, assistant director of the gallery. Space Still Available for Artscope

Space is still available for Artscope -- Chickasha's premiere arts camp. In its 11th year, Artscope is scheduled June 15-26 on the USAO campus. Tuition for the two-week, all day camp is $150 per child ages 8-12. Campers will be able to study drawing, painting, sculpting, theatre, dance and/or music, as well as experience presentations from guest artists. USAO Faculty Members Honored for Classroom and Research Work

Three faculty members were honored recently at the University of Science and Arts – two for teaching and one for research.

Dr. Linda McElroy and Dr. John Bruce received the Regents Award for Superior Teaching. Dr. Stephen Kandeh received the Superior Scholarship/Research Award. The USAO Board of Regents honored the recipients in April. Honorees receive a plaque signed by members of the board and a $1,000 stipend.

Offices Closed on Fridays Through Aug. 7

Gone Fishing

Most campus offices will close on Fridays this summer to save energy and give employees more time with their families, it was announced recently at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. Work schedules will return to normal after August 7.

The change does not apply to every office on campus, as essential functions in security, maintenance, food service and campus housing will observe regular hours through the summer. Each department will set its own schedules in order to best serve students and the public.

USAO Admission Application Goes 'Green'

High school students applying for admission at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma this fall will a find a free 'green' way to apply with a new online application.

"We want to make the application process to USAO easy, quick and convenient," said Kellee Johnson, admissions coordinator. "That is why we now have our application form online. Not only is it easier for the student, but it's also easy on the environment by eliminating paper."
