Senior Stars in Customized Metro Play Sept. 21-23
CHICKASHA – As an actor, Lonnie Iannazzo understands stepping into the shoes of actors before him when playing familiar roles. But the communication senior at the University of Science and Arts is in uncharted territory this weekend as he plays not only one, but eight characters in “The Grimsby Curse,” a metro play written specifically for him.
“This has been one of the most challenging experiences of my acting career,” Iannazzo said. “It is hard enough to come up with one character, let alone eight different ones. But challenging is a good thing and I think it has definitely been one of the most positive experiences ever.”
Last summer, Iannazzo participated in an online reality show called “Cast Me!” Similar to “American Idol,” participants were judged on their ability to act instead of sing. Every week one aspiring actor was voted off. Iannazzo won the competition, earning one of the biggest prizes: a play written specifically with him in mind.
Iannazzo stars in “The Grimsby Curse” Sept. 21 and 22 in the Individual Artists of Oklahoma (IAO) Gallery at 811 N. Broadway in Oklahoma City at 8 p.m. A matinee performance is scheduled for Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. Last weekend, the cast performed in the Nightingale Theatre in Tulsa. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $7 for students.
Written and directed by Robert Matson, the custom play centers around a boy looking for answers. Locked in a room, he searches for clues about the family curse that has killed his ancestors for seven generations. Iannazzo plays eight different roles as the drama takes the audience back to the origins of the curse. The play contains some adult situations and language.
“I have learned a lot about myself as a person and an actor. I really hope people can come out and enjoy the show and see all the hard work the cast has put into the show. It is a very unique play. It is something different, something fresh. I think people will really enjoy it.”
