MONTGOMERY, Florence E. (Kennedy)

Funeral for Florence E. Montgomery, 86, Lawton, will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 13, at First United Methodist Church of Lawton, Okla., with the Rev. Frankye A. Johnson, pastor, officiating.


Mrs. Montgomery died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, at a local care center.


Burial will be at Highland Cemetery under direction of Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home.


She was born Dec. 17, 1917, at Mineral Springs, Ark., to Thomas A. and Mary Young Kennedy. The family moved to the Pocasset community where she grew up and attended school. After graduation, she attended Oklahoma College for Women and graduated in 1941 with a teaching degree.

 

While at Oklahoma College for Women, she was a member of the Pi Zeta Kappa Honorary Religious Sorority and Pi Gamma Mu Honorary Social Studies Sorority.

 

She married Bernard M. Montgomery on Aug. 19, 1951, at First Methodist Church in Lawton. He died June 20, 1997, in Lawton. She retired after 27 years of teaching. She was a member of the Lawton Retired Teachers Association. She was also a member of First United Methodist Church for many years, where she was a member of the Tomlinson Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Women's Association.


Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law: Melva Montgomery Mullins and Darryl, and Betty Montgomery Rice and Steve, all of Lawton; a granddaughter, Jennifer Brooke Mullins, Norman; and a grandson, Stephen Montgomery Rice, Lawton; and five brothers and sisters: Katie Roubinek, Muleshoe, Texas; Neal Kennedy, Chickasha; Juanita VanSickle, Bethany; Chloie McFall, Jasper, Texas; and Bob Kennedy, Tahlequah; and many nieces and nephews.


She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter, four brothers and a sister.
