Funeral for Marguerite Spencer Bassel, 93, Lawton, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church with the Rev. Terry Koehn, pastor, officiating. Mrs. Bassel died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008, in Lawton. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens under direction of Becker Funeral Home. She was born Aug. 3, 1914, in Love County, to Conrad Eugene and Maude Virginia Nance Spencer. She was a graduate of the Oklahoma College for Women. She taught fourth grade at Sheridan Road and Brockland Elementary until her retirement. She and her students were recognized statewide for their contributions to the restoration and preservation of the Mattie Beal Home. She married retired Col. Russell W. Bassel on July 16, 1939, in Ardmore. He died April 25, 1997, in Lawton. They were members of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. She served as a volunteer at Comanche County Memorial Hospital. Survivors include four children: Sarah Wiseman, Lawton; James R. Bassel, Claremont, Calif.; Susan Heiligman, Palm Desert, Calif.; and Patricia Bassel, Wiesbaden, Germany; three grandchildren and their spouses: Todd and Brenda Wiseman, Lawton; James and Kelly Wiseman, Mansfield, Texas; and Lee Heiligman, Newport Beach, Calif.; three great-grandchildren: Brendan, Roxanne and Madelyn Wiseman; and a sister, Maidee LeForce, Covington. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son-in-law, Dan Wiseman; a granddaughter, Aimee Wiseman; a grandson, Chad Heiligman; and two brothers: Leroy Spencer and Charles Spencer.
