BATIE, Joan (Beard)
Joan (Beard) Batie, 78, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2010, in Oklahoma City with her daughter Helen at her side. Friends are invited to attend a memorial gathering in her honor from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday, April 10, in the Regents Room at the Student Center on the USAO campus in Chickasha, Okla. Mrs. Batie was born Sept. 17, 1931, in Chickasha, Okla., to Marie Gaston Beard and Thomas Ernest Beard. She attended Chickasha High School where she was active in the Chickette Pep Club as well as both Glee Club and French Club. After high school graduation in 1949, she attended and graduated from what was then the Oklahoma College for Women, now the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, in Chickasha. Her teaching career took her to Boulder, where she taught both French and Spanish, and where she met and married Arthur Howell Batie. They had one daughter, Barbara Helen Batie, born in 1961. After retirement, the family divided their time between Colorado, Chickasha, and Harlingen, Texas. She was a member of the Episcopal Church in Chickasha, and in recent years, had spent the bulk of her time in Oklahoma City to be close to her daughter. She is survived by her daughter, Helen, and many friends. Mrs. Batie was preceded in death by her parents; her older brother, Thomas Beard, Jr.; and her husband, Howell Batie. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Oklahoma City Community Foundation, 1000 N. Broadway, Oklahoma City, OK 73102.
