BLANTON, Greta E. (Carter)
Greta Elizabeth (Carter) Blanton passed away peacefully Saturday, March 3, 2012 at Texas-Health Presbyterian-Wilson N. Jones Hospital, Sherman, Texas. Services will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church in El Reno, Okla. on Thursday, March 8, 2012 at 10 a.m. Mrs. Blanton was born in El Reno, November 5, 1920 to Joseph Leroy Carter and Viola Elizabeth (Hayner) Carter. She graduated from El Reno High School in 1937, attended the Oklahoma College for Women from 1937-39 and then graduated from the University of Oklahoma in the Class of 1942. As a brilliant scholar, Mrs. Blanton was elected a member of the Mortar Board Honor Society, of which she remained a member for her entire life. Greta married Willard Barch Blanton on April 18, 1943 in El Reno. They enjoyed more than 68 years of wedded bliss. Recently, they were elected King and Queen of the Renaissance, Sherman on this past Valentine's Day. Raised in an era when mothers stayed home with their children, Greta did accept a position with the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration after her children were grown and she and her husband had been transferred to Washington, D.C. In her child rearing years, Greta was very active as a member of the Damrosch Music Club where she was a very accomplished violinist and singer. In 1954 Mrs. Blanton was honored by the El Reno Jaycees as the outstanding Mother of the Year. In 1957 she was honored as a Life Member of the Oklahoma Congress of Parents and Teachers. Mrs. Blanton was always active in the Wesley Methodist Church and her family was named Methodist Family of the Year for 1959. She served the Church as a member of its Board and as Chair for several terms. She taught Sunday School and sang in the church choir, and sponsored the Methodist Youth Fellowship programs for teens. In later years, Mrs. Blanton and her husband were selected to sing with the Community Chorus, which included a performance at Carnegie Hall, New York City. She was also a benefactor of El Reno Carnegie Library. Mrs. Blanton was pre-deceased by her parents and brothers: Joseph, Robert, Daniel, and Richard. Mrs. Blanton is survived by her husband, Willard; by her children: Robert Barch Blanton, Janice Elizabeth Blanton, and David Carter Blanton and wife Julie Cathryn; grandchildren: Laura Lee Castiglione, Andrea Elizabeth Schuett, Amanda Kate Pierce, Matthew Primm Blanton, and Cathryn Davina Francis. great-grandson: Evan Michael Schuett; and great-granddaughters: Aleyna Elizabeth Schuett and Anna Marie Castiglione. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to the donor's favorite charity.
