Fern Effie Cassel, of El Reno, passed away Thursday, July 31, 2008 in the Care Living Center in El Reno, Oklahoma. Fern was born January 1, 1915, at Dutton, Oklahoma, to John Emry Cassel and Effie Eva Cassel. Fern graduated from Pocasset, Oklahoma High School in 1933 and Oklahoma College for Women, Chickasha, Oklahoma in 1939. Fern attended Scarritt College in 1945 where she became a Diaconal Minister. Fern was a Home Economics teacher in Excelsior and Cromwell, Oklahoma. After attending Scarritt College, she began her career in Christian Education working in Houston, Texas and Tennessee. She then returned to Oklahoma working for the Western Methodist Conference. After 13 years with the Oklahoma Methodist Conference in Oklahoma City she was the Christian Education Director at The Village Methodist Church and later at Centenary Methodist in Lawton. She returned to Wesley in Oklahoma City which was her church for her remaining years, even after relocating to El Reno in 1998 to be near her Nephew and his wife, Dale and Dorothy Cassel.Fern was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City and taught classes and special lessons for many years. She was a member of the Builders Sunday School Class, who gave her special treatment through visits, cards and calls. Fern is preceded in death by her parents, John Emry Cassel and Effie Eva Cassel; and two brothers, Elbert Emry Cassel and Roy Leslie Cassel. Survivors include her sister-in-law Erma Ruth Cassel of El Reno, OK; nephews, Dale A. Cassel and wife, Dorothy F. Cassel of El Reno, OK, John Elden Cassel and wife, Mary Lou Cassel of Oklahoma City; nieces, Annice Hill and husband, Bill Hill of Verden, OK, Betty Pope and husband, Terry Pope of Bethany, OK. Also nephews, Elmer Lee Cassel and wife, Babe Cassel of Anchorage, Alaska, Don Cassel and wife, Felicia Cassel of Anchorage, Alaska and niece, LaDonna Nonneman and husband, Hal Nonneman of Anchorage, Alaska. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, August 4th, in the Wesley United Methodist Church in El Reno. Dr. Richard D. Cato and Rev. Phillip Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery in Chickasha, OK. Services are under the direction of Wilson Funeral Home in El Reno.
