Mary Joan Garrett, former resident of Blackwell, died Sunday, June 21, 2009, in Specialty Hospital in Tulsa. She was 83. The graveside service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, in Blackwell Cemetery with the Rev. Mark Miller and Rev. Craig Castleberry of Broadway Baptist Church officiating. Mary Joan Garrett was born July 2, 1925, in Blackwell, the daughter of Glen T. and Mary Faye Hill Randall. She grew up in Blackwell attending Blackwell schools and graduated in 1943. She then attended Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha. She married Cleo Owen Garrett on Jan. 26, 1944, in Nashville, Tenn., and following his discharge from the military they settled in Blackwell. In 1949 they moved to Braman before returning to Blackwell for a short time. In 1953 they moved to Henryetta. In 1962 they moved to Oswego, Kan., then Parsons, Kan., and later to Excelsior Springs, Mo. In 1977 they purchased the Breezewood Resort in Osage Beach, Mo. She moved to Sand Springs in 1981. She was a member of Broadway Baptist Church in Sand Springs and the Pilot Club International where she held various offices and recently received emeritus status with the organization. She enjoyed traveling. Survivors include her daughter, Dr. Tana Garrett of Sand Springs; her son, Glen Douglas Garrett of Olathe, Kan.; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband on July 18, 1981; her parents; and a sister, Janat Randall. Casket bearers will be Matthew Garrett, Edward Garrett Jr., Edward Garrett III, Travis Garrett, Tony Slaczka and Patrick Cole.
