Memorial service for Melva Jo Garrett, 78, Lawton, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Becker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Arthur Blount, pastor, First Baptist Church, Carnegie, and the Rev. Charlie Blount, pastor, First Baptist Church, El Reno, officiating. Mrs. Garrett died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009, at her home. She was born July 21, 1931, in Lawton, to John Ed and Willie Juanita Guthrie McGuire. She attended Cameron State Agricultural College and graduated from Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts at Chickasha. She received her masters degree at the University of Oklahoma. She was the first elementary school psychologist for Lawton Public Schools. She retired as the Special Education Coordinator on Jan. 3, 1994, after 27 years. She married Robert Garrett on July 21, 1950, in Medicine Park. He died Dec. 26, 2008. She was involved in the Special Olympics and was a member of Paradise Valley Baptist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, the Wichita Mountains Quilt Guild, Kappa Kappa Iota, Oklahoma Retired Teachers Association and Comanche County Retired Educators. She was a breast cancer survivor. Survivors include three children and their spouses: William Arthur and Ann Garrett, and John McGuire and Robin Garrett, all of Lawton; and Jonita and Arthur Blount, Carnegie; eight grandchildren and their spouses: Robby and Collin Garrett, Lawton; Chief Warrant Officer 2 John and Tasha Garrett, Fort Riley, Kan.; Jesse and Lisa Garrett, and Tanner and Kaci Biggs, all of Lawton; the Rev. Charlie and Renee Blount, El Reno; Justin and Atalie Blount, Hewitt, Texas; Jared and Emilie Blount, Chattanooga; and Ty and Melanie Jo Graham, Carnegie; and six great-grandchildren: Rylee Garrett, Kennedy Biggs, Avery Blount, Ethan Blount, Evan Blount and Ryan Todd Garrett. She was preceded in death by her parents. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donors choice.
