GLASS, Verna L. (Petty)
Funeral for Verna Lee Petty Glass, Richardson, Texas, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Whinery-Huddleston Chapel with the Rev. Philis Griffin, Centenary Methodist Church, officiating. She died Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009 in Richardson. Entombment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. She was born June 16, 1921, in Cold Springs to Sam and Spicie Mae Strickland Petty. She was raised and attended school in the Faxon and Indiahoma areas. She graduated from Indiahoma High School, and attended Cameron State Agricultural College. She started her teaching career at Cooperton, Mountain Park and Snyder. She married J.R. Glass on Sept. 27, 1944, in Arapaho. She left teaching to become a child protective worker with the Department of Human Services, but returned to college in order to complete her degree in education. She received her bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Oklahoma College for Women in 1955. She taught in the Lawton Public School system for a number of years and completed her teaching career with 10 years in the Harlingen, Texas, school system. She and her husband returned to Lawton, where they became involved in civic and church activities. She was a member of the Pioneer Women. Survivors include a daughter and husband, Donna Sue Jarman and Ed; granddaughters: Laura Diehl, Joan Holman and husband Blake, and Sandra DeKock and husband Greg; great grandsons: John Edward Holman, Preston Thomas Diehl and Julian Jarman DeKock; brother, Jim Petty; sister-in-law, Ruth Petty; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
