Funeral for Joan Means, 86, Lawton, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Randy Mitchell, pastor, First Baptist Church of Blair, officiating. Mrs. Means died Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at an assisted living center in Altus. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens under direction of Becker Funeral Home. She was born Nov. 4, 1922, in Oklahoma City, to Dan and Sybil Davis Hubbard. She attended Oklahoma College for Women at Chickasha before earning a bachelors degree at the University of Oklahoma. She married Royce B. Means, M.D. on Aug. 9, 1946, in Oklahoma City. He died March 23, 1991, in Lawton. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for more than 50 years. She was a member of Phoebe Class and worked in the Children’s Library and Media Center. She was a member of WMU, where she was the director from 1992 to 1993. She worked with family services at Head Start in Lawton, on the Election Board for Comanche County, and with Meals on Wheels. She was also a member of Entre Nous and PEO. Survivors include four children and their spouses: David Means, Lawton; Sheryl and the Rev. Randy Mitchell, Blair; Susan and Tommy O’Brien, Abilene, Texas; and Philip and Kay Means, Lawton; nine grandchildren: Randa Mitchell, Eric O’Brien, Michael Mitchell, Michael Pooschke, Adam O’Brien, Christi Mitchell, Bryan Means, Lindsay Mitchell and Kenton Means; a great-granddaughter, Hallie Grace Pooschke; a brother, Wayne Hubbard, Tulsa; a brother-in-law, William Pratt, PhD, Fort Worth, Texas; a sister-in-law and her husband, Judy and Michael Mowrey, Sunnyvale, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters: Velma Ruth McBirney and Eleanor Pratt.
