Long time La Habra and Brea resident, Ruth Schermitzler died on February 25, 2011; she was 87. Mrs. Schermitzler was born in Oklahoma and after graduating from Oklahoma College for Women with a BA in Speech, she attained her teaching certification and moved with her family to La Habra in the 1940's, where she met and married Lyle Schermitzler, who was serving in the U.S. Air Force. La Habra became home until the mid 1970's when they moved to Brea. Ruth was an "activist". She became involved with the La Habra Women's Club and during her 50+ years as a member she was elected President of the La Habra Junior's Women Club, the Orange County District Women Clubs and California State Women Clubs. She also held a number of other positions including Parliamentarian and inspiration Chairperson. Ms. Schermitzler traveled extensively as a sought after speaker for the California Federation of Women's Clubs. Her awards of recognition for her service are numerous. Ruth also became involved with California State University, Fullerton serving on the Advisory Board for more than 30 years under three university presidents; Ms Schermitzler was also very involved in CSUF's vision and visionary program, Commencement and Scholarship Programs; for her service to CSUF she was awarded honorary alumni status. For many years, Ruth also served on the Disneyland Advisory Board. Ruth's husband "Bud" died in 1997; her survivors are a daughter Suzie (La Habra), a son Neil (Chicago), a daughter-in-law, Diane and granddaughter Rachael, who like her grandmother attended a College for Women (Saint Mary's, Notre Dame). Ruth will be laid to rest at Memory Garden in Brea, California with a chapel service on March 5, 2011 at 12:00 PM. Memory Garden Mortuary.
