Dr. Clyde Edgar Spruell, 81, Vice President Emeritus for Fiscal Affairs of the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO), passed away on January 31, 2010 in his home after a short battle with cancer. Dr. Spruell was born in Brookside, Alabama, on September 11, 1928 to the late John Edgar and Zora Sanford Spruell. Dr. Spruell served with the U.S. Army during the occupation of Germany from 1946 to 1948, where he met Miss Maria Agathe Muenzer. They were married from May 22, 1954 until Mrs. Spruell's death on July 17, 1996. Dr. Spruell and Wanda Woodard were married on August 15, 1998 and were living in Chickasha at the time of his death. Dr. Spruell served in the U.S. Air Force from 1949 until 1966, acting mainly as an Air Traffic Controller. He came to Oklahoma in 1961 when he was stationed at Tinker Air Force Base. After retiring from the Air Force, Dr. Spruell began a career in university teaching and administration. He received a Master's degree in Business Administration and the Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Oklahoma. He was also designated as a Certified Professional Contract Manager by the National Contract Management Association. During his career, Dr. Spruell held various senior level administrative and faculty positions at OU and USAO. At OU he served as Director of the Grants and Contracts Administration Office and Assistant Professor in the College of Business. In 1976, Dr. Spruell came to USAO as Vice President for Fiscal Affairs and Associate Professor of Business Administration, and served in these positions until his retirement in 1992. Dr. Spruell wrote and published numerous articles concerning business and financial subjects and was an active member in numerous business and civic organizations. He held offices on various boards and organizations statewide. He was past president of the Southwestern Small Business Institute Association and the Chickasha Rotary Club. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, where he served as an Elder for many years. He also served as a Lamplighter and Volunteer Training Specialist for Aid Association of Lutherans (AAL) and served as President of AAL Branch 4325 located in Chickasha. He is survived by his wife, Wanda Spruell; daughter and her husband, Karen and Martin Kalb, of Blanchard, Oklahoma; daughter and her husband, Susan and Van Mobley, of Thiensville, Wisconsin; and three grandchildren: Haley Kalb, Pierce Mobley and Quinn Mobley; and by Wanda's children: Sandy and Glenn Kerr, Jeanee and James York, Rocky and Neva Woodard; and grandchildren: Cassy and David Russell, Glenn Eddie Kerr, Jamie and Peter Stuth, Jeri and Jeff Brooks, Trey and Kyle Woodard; and 5 great-grandchildren.In addition to his parents, Dr. Spruell was preceded in death by two brothers, Cleve Spruell and Robert Walker.Funeral services for Dr. Clyde Spruell will be held Wednesday, February 3, at 11:00 a.m., at the USAO Chapel. The Rev. David Thompson will officiate. Burial will be at Fairlawn Cemetery in Chickasha. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 2, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., at McRay Funeral Home in Chickasha.
