Thursday, June 16, 2005

Children who need academic or athletic challenges this summer can find them at the University of Science and Arts. Among the summer activities being offered on campus are sports camps, Artscope, a reading program, and swimming lessons.

Dr. Nancy Osborn, a physical education professor at USAO, will be available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 26 and 27 in the USAO Fieldhouse foyer to enroll beginning and intermediate swimmers in the summer swimming program. Two sessions cost $35 each, and are available on June 6-17 and June 20-July 1. Osborn encourages swimmers to enroll early, as enrollment is limited. For more information, contact Osborn at 574-1246.

The USAO education department is sponsoring a free tutoring program for local elementary students who need additional help in learning to read. The tutoring sessions, supervised by USAO education professor Dr. Linda McElroy, are scheduled for 9:05 a.m. each Tuesday and Thursday from June 7 to July 28 in Gary Hall.

Interested parents can obtain an application from the USAO Web site, www.usao.edu/ usao-news or the USAO education department. The completed application form should be mailed to McElroy at 1727 W Alabama, Chickasha, OK 73018. Children are selected in the order in which they are registered.

USAO men’s basketball coach Brisco McPherson will host his annual basketball camp June 6-10 and June 27-July 1 at USAO Fieldhouse. The camp is open to boys and girls ages 6-16, with a mini camp for students age 6-11 for $60 and a day camp for students age 12-16 for $110, including lunch.

Artscope, an annual summer arts program, is scheduled for June 13-24 on the USAO campus. Students age 8-12 are invited to participate in Artscope, which is set for Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, contact Lisa Souza at (580) 332-3244, Mary Jeffries at 224-0040 or by e-mail to artscope1999@aol.com.
