USAO Students Walk for Awareness
A group of students at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma will stage a nonstop walk to help victims of cystic fibrosis on April 15.
The Sigma chapter of the Phi Lambda Chi fraternity at USAO will host a cystic fibrosis awareness walk on Thursday. During the event, at least one member of the fraternity will be walking around the oval on campus from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“We decided to do this because we wanted to help — in any way we could,” Fraternity sponsor Adeel Siddiqui said. “The Phi Lambda Chi fraternity (Sigma chapter) at USAO wanted to do our part in showing people that every little bit helps no matter where you are.”
The members of the fraternity are raising money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, a nonprofit group that helps support research and improve the quality of life for those affected by the disease.
Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease. It affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 Americans who have been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, also referred to as CF, according the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Web site, www.cff.org.
The disease causes the body to produce excess mucus that clogs the lungs and obstructs the pancreas. There is no cure and the median age of survival for patients with CF is more than 37 years, the Web site states.
The walk at USAO is being done in conjunction with the CF Foundation’s 2010 Great Strides initiative.
The fraternity’s goal is to raise $150 for the CF Foundation, but Siddiqui said raising awareness is maybe more important to the cause.
“The best way for people to help out and get involved is simply to spread the word about the CF Foundation and the research they are doing to find a cure for this crippling disease,” Siddiqui said. “Events like the CF Great Strides walk make a lot of difference because they let people know that something is being done to raise awareness.”
Siddiqui said those who want to help out should come by the walk on Thursday and simply take part, even if not for very long. The group also will accept donations during the event or at any time.
