Bill Smith Ballpark goes pink in April

CHICKASHA – USAO Athletics and Colleges Against Cancer chapter will host their final Pink Out Cancer games of the 2011-12 season as both the baseball and softball teams go pink this April.

“We are excited to bring the pink games to Bill Smith Ballpark,” said Dr. Jeannette Loutsch, CAC sponsor. “We hope to see all fans match the Drovers in pink.”

The baseball’s pink game will be April 12 with a game at 3 p.m. against Hillsdale College. Softball will have its pink game against April 23 against Rogers State, beginning at 2 p.m.

CAC hosted a pink game with USAO soccer in October and a pink game with USAO basketball in February.

In addition to the color change, CAC members will be selling caramel corn, baked goods, assorted candy, water and sunflower seeds at both concession stands. The money raised will go back to CAC, who purchases the uniforms and t-shirts the players don.

Fans can call Loutsch to order their very own Strike Out Cancer shirt for $15, she said.

The idea behind bringing Pink Out Cancer games to USAO started with women’s basketball, and the first pink game was in February of 2011. CAC then went on to host a pink game for softball in April of 2011.

This season, however, Loutsch decided to get the men involved too. USAO soccer held a pink game in October with both men’s and women’s teams wearing pink uniforms.

In basketball, the Drover women sported new pink uniforms, and the men wore pink warm up t-shirts and pink shoelaces. This will be the first time USAO baseball has been involved.

“It’s just a great way to get the awareness out there and get our sports teams and fans involved in something so much bigger than us,” Loutsch said. “The coaches and athletes have all been extremely interested in participating and 100 percent accommodating. It’s just great to see.”
