CHICKASHA – Strong hitting by the USAO Drovers led to a 14-1 rout over conference foe Southern Nazarene on Thursday afternoon at Bill Smith Ballpark.
The Drovers came out with 11 hits off 30 at bats in the single game, which was called after seven innings thanks to the mercy rule.
SNU’s Ryan Williams started the game off for the Crimson Storm’s with a run in the first inning off an RBI by Ryon Butts. It was SNU’s only run of the game.
It was first baseman Garan Qualls who kick started the Drovers offense in second inning when he knocked one out of the park, tying the game.
After a scoreless next inning, the Drovers crossed the plate seven times in the fourth to bring the run total to 8-1. USAO grabbed another three runs in each of the next two innings for a 14-1 final.
Qualls went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while junior Brandon Jewett scored a run and batted four runners in. Also scoring two runs were Robert Summers, Conner Bridgman, Romus Cezar and Vince Linke.
Sophomore pitcher David Garcia spent the entire seven innings on the mound, giving up just one run and six hits from the 30 batters he faced.
The win propels the Drovers to 13-6 overall and 4-3 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
The Drovers finish the series with a doubleheader on Saturday at Southern Nazarene. They play Cameron University in Lawton before returning home Thursday for a game against Oklahoma City at 3 p.m.
