CHICKASHA – The Drovers grabbed back-to-back wins on Friday afternoon over the Wayland Baptist Pioneers and are on their way to a sweep of the conference series.
The teams will finish the series on Saturday afternoon with a single nine-inning game beginning at 1 p.m. at Bill Smith Ballpark.
USAO dominated the first game, winning it 13-5. Jared Coon, who has been playing second base since Robert Summers was injured a few weeks ago, went 4-for-4 with three runs and leftfielder Brian Vigo went 3-for-3 with two hits and three RBIs.
Newt Compton scored two runs and batted in five runners total in the game, while Romus Cezar scored another three runs.
Heath Wilda scored two runs and had two RBIs, and Zach Gonzalez had one run in the game.
Seth Sturgeon earned the win on the mound, pitching more than four innings and throwing six strikeouts. David Garcia and Kevin Schultz split the remaining innings for the Drovers.
USAO had similar success in the second game, winning it 6-4.
After giving up a run, the Drovers tied the game in the second with a run by Vigo, off an RBI by Konrad Mueller. They then earned two more in the next inning, scoring Cezar and Wilda.
A fourth run in the fifth, again by Vigo, put the Drovers in great position before a three-RBI homer in the sixth by WBU’s Josh Carroll tied the game again.
But nevertheless, the Drovers responded with back-to-back doubles to score Cezar and Coon and take the final lead.
Adam Wilson pitched five innings, throwing four strikeouts. Kevin Schultz, who earned the win, and Josh Goodman each pitched an inning and threw two strikeouts a piece.
The Drovers are 14-13 overall and 5-7 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
