CHICKASHA – Thirteen runs in nine innings gave the Drovers an easy win 13-4 over Bethany College on Saturday afternoon.
The Drovers (13-2) appeared to be in trouble early in the game. Bethany College’s first at bat resulted in a single, and the Swedes scored two in the first inning and a third in the second inning.
Down 3-0 heading into the bottom of the third, the Drovers found their stride. With two runners on base, senior Brian Vigo hit a three-run homer over the scoreboard, scoring Zach Gonzalez and Heath Wilda along with himself. Immediately following, Chance Hill hit a solo homer to the same spot to give the Drovers the lead.
USAO scored another five in the next inning and four in the final three innings while giving up just one more run — a solo homer — in the fifth.
Vigo hit a second home run — sixth of the season — later in the game. He went 5-for-6 at the plate, scored three runs and drove in another six for the day. The center fielder is averaging .420 at bat for the season.
Gonzalez, who scored three runs on Saturday, hit a two-RBI home run in the eighth inning to score himself and Robert Summers.
Summers, Wilda and Hill each scored two runs total in the game. Right fielder Blake Pruett had USAO’s other run.
David Garcia (5-0) spent the first seven innings on the mound, throwing a total of six strikeouts. Also getting playing time at pitcher were Chris Fischer and Josh Terrell, both of whom threw an inning without giving up a hit.
The two teams will finish the series Sunday at Bill Smith Ballpark. The doubleheader will begin at 11 a.m.
