CHICKASHA – Looking back on the 2012 regular season, Drover baseball assistant coach Matt Hibbitts said despite a slow start, it’s been a fun season to watch develop.
“We were a little bit disappointed about how things started out. But the last 22 games, I think we went 16-6, which is a really good comeback,” he said. “We’re pretty happy with it and excited to get ready for the conference tournament.”
The Drovers ended the regular season 27-19 and tied for most conference wins in school history with 17, and look to face some tough SAC opponents in the conference tournament.
Hibbitts named several key players to this season’s success, but ultimately said he believes it’s the team that wins games.
“You can keep naming guys, but it’s been a real team effort being able to score some runs,” he said. “It’s been fun these last 22 games to see these guys really gel together and play well as a team.”
In the conference tournament, two of the three teams the Drovers face are from the host city but Hibbitts said that just adds to the enjoyment.
“I think that’s kind of the fun thing about sports though, going into a place that’s not your own and beating that team,” he said. “I think it will be exciting and I think we have a chance to do really well.”
