CHICKASHA – The Drovers overcame Mid-America Christian University on Friday afternoon thanks to a strong eighth inning by the Drovers.
The Drovers were up 1-0 to the Evangels going into the eighth inning. USAO’s first run was scored in the bottom of the fifth when Konrad Mueller came home from third on a throwing error by the MACU catcher.
USAO fell behind, however, giving up two runs in the top of the eighth. They countered when first baseman Zach Gonzalez hit a two-RBI homer over the USAO scoreboard. Jared Coon scored on the play.
Then a few batters later, a balk by MACU pitcher Blaine Garriott sent runners to second and third. Brandon Jewett singled to right field to score runners: Newt Compton and Brian Vigo.
The Drovers held on to their 5-2 lead in the top of the ninth to win the game.
David Garcia spent more than seven innings on the mound and threw seven strikeouts, but it was closer Josh Goodman who earned the win on Friday.
The Drovers are 20-16 overall and 11-10 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. They finish the series with a doubleheader at Mid-America Christian beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday.
USAO’s next home game will be 3 p.m. Thursday against Hillsdale College. It will be baseball’s first ever Strike Out Cancer Pink Game, and fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game.
