CHICKASHA – Richard Nixon was President of the United States. The Vietnam War was winding to a close. The Price is Right began challenging viewers name the price of regular household items. And Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” topped the charts.
It was 1972, and the Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts began entertaining Chickasha as college athletics found its way to the community.
CHICKASHA – Just five years after he graduated from USAO, Sam Hayden is back as the assistant baseball coach and is eager to help the program continue to make a strong presence in one of the toughest conferences in the league.
“My goal at USAO is to help continue the winning tradition that we have and to help make the University of Science and Arts a premiere program in the Sooner Athletic Conference,” Hayden said.
SHAWNEE – For the second day in a row, the Drovers played nine innings and scored 10 runs, but it wasn’t enough to earn the win in the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament.
Taking on Saint Gregory’s in the Drovers’ final game of the tournament, shortstop Konrad Mueller hit a grand slam in the bottom of the second to put the Drovers in the lead for the first time in the game.
CHICKASHA – Looking back on the 2012 regular season, Drover baseball assistant coach Matt Hibbitts said despite a slow start, it’s been a fun season to watch develop.
“We were a little bit disappointed about how things started out. But the last 22 games, I think we went 16-6, which is a really good comeback,” he said. “We’re pretty happy with it and excited to get ready for the conference tournament.”
