CHICKASHA – Despite playing two tough games and spending some time tied or in the lead, both Drover teams fell to the Oklahoma Baptist Bison on Thursday night.
Facing No. 9 Oklahoma Baptist for the second time, the Drover men quickly gave up 12 unanswered points and just four minutes into the game, they were down by 15. But soon, the Drovers got into their stride and pulled the game into a tie within the next 10 minutes.
The defending national champions were up by just four going into half. The Bison were able to increase that gap by shooting more than 62 percent from the field in the second half and defeated the Drovers 97-73.
Senior Sahlih Butts scored 17 points for USAO, due in part to making three-quarters of his three-point shots on the night. He also had five rebounds and an assist. Thomas Peters added another 16 to the Drovers total and Trell Porter scored 13.
The Drovers fall to 7-11 and 3-9 in conference play.
The Drover women came out strong against OBU, who fell to the Drovers earlier this season. USAO went into halftime leading by 15 points.
But the Bison weren’t done. A second-half rally by the Lady Bison pulled the game within just a few points and OBU took the lead for the first time in the game with 1:30 left. Unable to make a last-second shot, the Drovers lost 68-65.
Aita Gueye was the team’s leading scorer with 19 points and seven rebounds. Tiffany Jupin added another 10 to the Drovers’ total.
The Drovers are 6-13 overall and 2-10 in the conference.
Both USAO teams travel to Shawnee to take on Saint Gregory’s at 3 and 5 p.m. on Saturday. Their next home game will be Feb. 3 against Lubbock Christian. Tip off is at 6 and 8 p.m. It will be City Workers’ Night and all Chickasha city employees will get in free.
Thursday was Craziest Fan Night at the USAO Fieldhouse. Savannah Basco was named the Drovers’ Craziest Fan. Coming a close second was her brother, Aden.
USAO had its first fan of the season to sink a half-court shot. Business administration freshman Jacob Crase went home with a free DVD player.
