CHICKASHA – As the leaves turn from a beautiful green to a crisp gold, Drover spirit takes over campus and, frankly, Madness sets in as fans prepare for the start of Drover basketball.
Drover Madness, USAO’s annual basketball pep rally, will open basketball season at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 30 in the USAO Fieldhouse.
“It’s a fun event that kicks off the basketball season,” said Coach Brisco McPherson, who first implemented the event 18 years ago. “And, of course, there’s free T-shirts and free food involved. Plus, you get to know both teams in a fun environment.”
The event, which is full of games, dances, contests and as always, free food from Jake’s Rib and free T-shirts from Shirts N Stuff, is free and open to students and community alike. It also is hosted by Chickasha's Kool 105.5 FM.
In addition to just being a great time, the event acts as a way to introduce the 2012-13 basketball teams to the general public.
This will be Women’s Basketball Coach Jennifer Hayden’s first Drover Madness, and she is eager to show her squad off to the town and campus.
“It’s our first time to interact with the community, so we are certainly looking forward to the opportunity,” she said.
While Drover Madness will remain similar to previous years, McPherson said they are planning to host shooting contests between the men’s and the women’s teams and maybe even mixing men and women together to scrimmage.
With USAO Student Homecoming moved to the fall, Student Activities Board also will be sponsoring the event. Student Homecoming will run from Oct. 29-Nov. 2, with the Homecoming basketball game falling with the season opener at 7 p.m. Nov. 1. The Drover men will take on Northwestern Oklahoma State in the USAO Fieldhouse.
