CHICKASHA – As the air grows colder in Chickasha, residents know fall means one thing: Drover basketball.
Each year, crowds flock to the USAO Fieldhouse for USAO’s annual basketball pep rally, Drover Madness. The event promises to give fans the opportunity to meet the basketball teams while enjoying one of the most popular campus events of the year.
Madness is set for 6:30 p.m. Oct. 28 at the USAO Fieldhouse. The event is free and open to the public.
“It’s an opportunity for the community and the student body to get a first-hand look at our athletes, so they can put a face with the name,” said Vinson Metcalf, head men’s basketball coach. “It allows the players to build some camaraderie with the students and the community.”
In its 19th year, Madness will feature fan contests and giveaway, some team drills, a performance by the Drover Dancers and an introduction to both men’s and women’s teams.
“The girls look forward to and enjoy the event,” said Jennifer Hayden, head women’s basketball coach. “It is an opportunity to have some fun and interact with the community.”
As in years past, Jake’s Rib and Shirts N Stuff will sponsor the event. Fans are invited to enjoy free barbecue from Jake’s following the pep rally.
Drover Madness will be part of the USAO Library's Belly Rewards program, so students can check in to earn points.
The Drovers begin play later that week. The men travel to Northwestern Oklahoma State for a game set for Oct. 30, while the women are set to play at the Southwestern Christian Classic on Nov. 1-2.
The men’s home opener, scheduled for 7 p.m. Nov. 5 against Central Oklahoma, will be the Student Activities Board Student Homecoming. SAB will be announcing the Homecoming King and Queen at halftime.
The first chance to see the USAO women in action at home will be at 6 p.m. Nov. 12 against Texas College. It will be Armed Forces Night at the USAO Fieldhouse, and military members, veterans and their families are invited to attend the game for free.
