SAN DIEGO, CALIF. – For the first time in school history, both Drover soccer teams have made it into the 2011 NAIA Soccer National Championship Opening Round, and USAO is offering a chance to watch them both in action right in Chickasha.
In the women’s first trip to nationals, they drew No. 4 Point Loma Nazarene, based out of San Diego, Calif. The Drovers kick off at 1 p.m. central standard time on Saturday.
CHICKASHA – With both teams qualifying for the national tournament, the Drovers have six days to prepare for their 2011 NAIA National Championship Opening Round opponents after the brackets were released Sunday night.
“We are excited about the opportunity,” Hampton said. “Both teams drew quality opponents, but it’s what we expect in the final 32. We will work hard this week to do our very best.”
CHICKASHA – Helping the Drovers in 10 of their 11 shutouts this season and scoring six total goals on the season, sophomore Scott Parkinson was named Sooner Athletic Conference Defensive MVP for the 2011 season.
Along with helping hold the back line all season, Parkinson is tied as the team’s third leading scorer this season. He scored the game-winning goal early in the season in a 3-0 win over Texas Wesleyan.
CHICKASHA – Eager to prove their worth at top seed, the Drover men scored two goals against the Bison on Monday afternoon to send themselves to the Sooner Athletic Conference Finals and keep their national tournaments hopes alive.
CHICKASHA – Epitomizing student-athlete, three USAO Drover soccer players were named Capitol One Academic All-District on Friday.
To earn the honor, athletes must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or higher, be at least of sophomore status and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games. One Drover man, Niall Crick, and two Drover women, Leslie Bross and Gabby Barros, earned the honor.
