CHICKASHA – The Drover men opened 2011 with their first conference win of the season with a solid 12-point victory over Northwestern Oklahoma State on New Year’s Day.
The Drovers started off strong, quickly pulling into the lead against the Rangers. USAO led most of the first half and went into halftime up by just two. After 14 successful field goals in the second half, the Drovers won the game 70-58.
Sophomore Kenneth Durham scored 18 points and had seven rebounds in his first appearance as a Drover. Senior Thomas Peters put another 13 points on the board for USAO.
Senior Sahlih Butts had his seventh double double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Drover men are 5-5 and 1-3 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
The Drover women played a tough game against the Lady Rangers earlier Saturday night. The game went down to the last few seconds, but the Rangers came out on top 53-52 in the end.
Senior Aita Gueye held true to her average, putting 16 points on the board for USAO. Maggie Oliver had one of her best games of the season with 11 points — nine of which came from three-pointers.
Korie Hargus was USAO’s highest rebounder with seven in the game.
The Drover women are 5-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
The Drovers head off to play four away games in a row before returning home Jan. 15 against Oklahoma City. Games tip off at 6 and 8 p.m. It will be Black Out the Stars night in the USAO Fieldhouse, and Drover fans should come donning black attire.
