CHICKASHA – Starting off her third season at USAO, women’s basketball head coach Laci Tompkins said her returners, including Tabby Bailey, Tashina Ototivo, Victoria Russell, Paige Pulliam and Hannah Henry, will hold a significant role on the team.
“I’m really looking forward to them,” Tompkins said. “They are really setting a standard of leadership, pushing everyone and knowing what to expect, so I’m really enjoying that. They are going to be a big help.”
But in addition to those players, Tompkins brought in some NCAA Division I and Division II talent to help round out the team with some skilled players.
“They’ve seen that level of play, but the Sooner Athletic Conference takes it up a notch,” she said. “We’re going to have to bring out ‘A’ game to the floor every night or in this league, it’s dog-eat-dog.”
Starting off this season, Tompkins will have a new assistant coach when her former player and Northwestern Oklahoma State graduate assistant Leandra Johnson joined the coaching staff.
“It’s always really special when you have a player who wants to come back,” Tompkins said. “She’s going to be a great asset.”
The Drovers open the season on the road in a tournament this weekend before playing their first home game at 6 p.m. on Nov. 7 against Texas Wesleyan.
