The USAO Drover men's soccer team continued their perfect run in the Sooner Athletic Conference as the women fell in their matchup against Southern Nazarene University during conference action at home Oct. 6.
The Drover women scored an early goal at the 2:30 minute marker thanks to Brittany Jay of Tulsa. Jay was assisted by Calli Cooper of Norman on the play. Then Taylor Fain of Edmond drove the ball and nailed it to the net at the 7:18 minute marker to push the score to 2-0 in favor of the Drovers. Fain was assisted by Erika Griffith of Lawton and Gabby Martinez of Oklahoma City on the play.
SNU responded at the 12:07 minute marker as Randi Duncan hit a goal to push the score to 2-1. After 30 minutes of battling back and forth, SNU’s Alanna Mena scored at the 44:29 minute marker to push the score to 2-2. After halftime, the Drovers kept on fighting despite injuries. At the 69:22 minute marker, SNU’s Bruna Da Cas scored to give SNU the lead at 3-2 -- which was the final score.
The Drover women are now 2-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference and 8-3 overall. They go on the road to take on Oklahoma Baptist Oct. 9 before returning to Drover Pitch Oct. 17 to take on St. Gregory's at 1 p.m.
The Drover men started the game off with a high intensity level. USAO struck first with a goal by Nikola Cakarevic of Belgrade, Serbia, at the 32:50 minute mark. Cakarevic was assisted by Niall Crick of Leith, Scotland.
In the second half, USAO's Lasse Hupfield of Copenhagen, Denmark, found Jeremy Kari Kari of Essex, England, half open. Kari Kari received the ball, drove it and sent the ball to the back of the goal -- pushing the score to 2-0 in favor of USAO.
At the 69:39 minute mark, Dusan Rasovic of Belgrade, Serbia, connected with Jake Cottage of Raunds, England, at the 69:39 minute mark. Just then, Cottage launched the ball from deep on the field, sending it by the goalie to score. Cottage's shot was the deepest goal of the season for the Drovers, measuring somewhere between 30-35 yards out.
The Drovers were looking like they would record their sixth consecutive shutout of the season, when SNU’s Alwin Gherghescu scored off an assist by Thierry Gakire. At the 82:04 minute marker to push the score to the game's final score of 3-2.
The Drover men advance to a 10-1 overall and 3-0 in the SAC. The team is ranked number one in the conference. They go on the road to take on Oklahoma Baptist Oct. 9 before returning to Drover Pitch Oct. 17 to take on St. Gregory's at 3 p.m.
