CHICKASHA– The Drovers (6-11) came into the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament looking to upset the no. 3 seed Wayland Baptist to continue the season.
The Drovers ultimately had the shot advantage throughout the game, but fell 1-0 on Saturday evening to the Pioneers in the Sooner Athletic Conference quarterfinals.
With the loss, USAO ends a season which saw the Drovers show progress in the conference season to grab the six seed in the playoffs. The team outshot Wayland Baptist 18-11, but had trouble finding the back of the net.
Coach Jimmy Hampton was very proud of the way USAO played and showed determination when things weren’t going their way.
“I’m proud of the young ladies that represented USAO with class and grit tonight, we had 80 percent of the play and outshot them,” Hampton said. “USAO is a great program and these young ladies are a great group.”
There was a close call in the 80th minute to tie the game as Rhiannon Brewster took a free kick and hit the crossbar and Wayland was able to clear the ball out to seal the win.
USAO had three seniors who played their final game as a Drover and Hampton was very proud of the effort the seniors gave to this team. Those seniors were Lauren Carter, Fran Monfron and Linda Addo.
“Overall we are grateful to our seniors and proud of our young team,” Hampton said. “We are looking forward and optimistic about our bright future, this is not the end for the program, but merely a chance to regroup, and work hard in the offseason.”
