Drovers topple Tabor College

CHICKASHA – Both USAO Drover soccer teams dominated the Tabor College Bluejays from minute one in a game Friday afternoon in Chickasha.

The Drover women (4-1-1) almost shut out the Lady Bluejays but gave up a goal with seconds left in the game and won 7-1. The men (6-0) netted 11 goals in the 90 minutes of play, and won the game — but they may have lost a star player for the season.

The women’s game started off right, with a goal by junior Emily Stevenson one minute into the game. Her goal was off an assist from Calli Cooper. Cooper, a sophomore from Norman, stood out Friday afternoon with her second hat trick in a row. In addition to her three goals, she had two assists.

Right on her heals, however, was team captain Taylor Fain, who scored two goals and had an assist. Brittany Jay also scored Friday.

Despite a 7-1 win, Coach Jimmy Hampton said he feels like the team is struggling a bit.

“But we’re just going to have to work our way out,” he said.

The Drover men also started off the game strong, with Breno Figueiredo scoring within the first minute of play.

But it was Nikola Cakarevic who shined Friday after scoring five goals and one assist against the Bluejays.

Nicolas Alberto had two goals and an assist, and Richard Norman also scored two goals. Daniel Gibson scored the final goal for the Drovers on a penalty kick.

Last year’s leading scorer, David Otieno, helped the Drovers with four assists Friday before going down and sustaining a likely season-ending injury. Coaches and trainer Chris Basco think Otieno tore his MCL.

“The men played sharp. It’s disappointing to lose All-American David Otieno to a knee injury for the season,” Hampton said. “I feel for him, and I hate it for our team.”

The Drovers open conference play next week with conference rival Oklahoma City University. The Stars will be looking for revenge against the USAO men’s team, which defeated OCU last year to win the Sooner Athletic Conference Championship and receive a bid to the National Tournament. The games begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Drover Pitch.
