Biography

Whether it be in print, on the web, on a t-shirt, a billboard, a magazine or anywhere else, if it is about the university (and looks good), then Shayna Pond probably had a part in its design. Shayna is the primary university Designer in the Media and Community Relations Office. She started at USAO in Sept. 2009.

As a designer at a creative institution like USAO, it may be easier to describe what Shayna doesn't do, but her official job description includes the artistic production of event promotions, admissions campaigns, web initiatives and brand development for the university.

Drawing has been Shayna’s passion from the time she was first handed a Crayon. For her, making a living as an artist is like playing a game -- and always winning!  She studied illustration for three years at Oklahoma State University and completed her degree in Visual Communications at the University of Oklahoma in 2009.

Pond began professional freelancing in design and illustration in 2007.  She is inspired by the people and places around her, far away cultures, her great grandma’s childhood stories and the history of the American West. She finds that she loves to do her work no matter where she is.

Shayna always carries her laptop and her Wacom in a big red bag. She is thankful that technology has provided her a way to make art without making a big giant mess. Her creative philosophy is to accomplish something better tomorrow than she accomplished today.

Bloglines

  • I was reading my favorite blog today, The Daily Heller, and he mused about this book 420 Characters. Illustrator Lou Beach is using his Facebook status (limited to 420 characters) as a holding place for short stories, very short stories, and very poetic. How creative is that! Last year I was reading about sms poetry contests, and now facebook status short stories!

  • I was asked by Jessica and Kellie why I don't like Arial and I guess it is primarily a snobbery issue. The general reason is because it is Window's not as attractive knockoff version of the classic, my good friend, Helvetica. If you are not completely bored of typeface talk then you may understand a little more by reading these two articles. See excerpt here:

  • Also, there is a fantastic exhibition that opened on May 20 at The Animazing Gallery in SoHo, New York including the weird, wonderful and wacky artists and illustrators, Dr.

Every time I think of the terrible mess caused by the recent oil spills and the depressing state of the economy, I think it's a good time to be be immersed in beautifully mysterious and interwoven fantasy worlds. I definitely recommend the book Johnathan Strange and Mr. Norell by Susanna Clarke. Some patience is required to get into it. However, I was eventually taken completely in by the depth and credibility of the universe she created.
