University Mandatory Face Covering Policy

USAO has implemented and will enforce a policy mandating that masks be worn by employees, students and visitors (1) when they are inside University facilities and vehicles and (2) when they are outdoors on campus and social distancing of at least six feet is not possible.1 2 This policy will remain in effect until further notice.  

Campus Face Covering Policies and ProcedureS

I. Policy

All individuals in indoor University facilities must wear fabric or disposable surgical-style mask, shield, bandanas or gaiter that cover their nose and mouth. Face coverings must be worn by all passengers in University-provided transportation, unless traveling alone. Drivers must wear a face covering when passengers are in the vehicle. Individuals may remove face covering only if they are in their own enclosed private workspace with no one else present or separated by a protective partition or in their housing assignment as more fully described below.

II. Employees (Faculty and Staff)

  1. Provided Masks
    1. The University will make masks available to employees.
    2. All employees will receive a Welcome Back bag that will include:
      1. One surgical-style fabric masks
      2. Five surgical-style disposable masks
      3. One 4-ounce bottle of hand sanitizer for personal and workspace use
    3. Additional surgical-style masks may be obtained from the Personnel and Finance Office.
  2. Face covering Re-Use and Cleaning
    1. Disposable filtration surgical-style masks can be worn on campus for five consecutive days, or until soiled, whichever occurs first.
    2. Fabric face coverings should be washed and fully dried after each day’s wear. Appropriate cleaning of the face covering is the responsibility of the individual.
  3. University Facilities
    1. Employees may remove face coverings when inside University facilities only (1) when alone in a room or separated by a protective partition or socially distanced by more than 6 feet and (2) while participating in activities in which a face covering cannot practically be worn, such as eating and drinking or playing a wood/wind musical instrument as part of their work.
    2. Employees, students, prospective students and guests are required to wear face coverings in common areas, hallways and offices during University tours.

III. Students

  1. Provided Masks
    1. The University will make masks available to students. Students may also provide their own face coverings that comply with this policy.
      1. The University will supply one surgical-style fabric mask.
      2. Surgical-style disposable masks, if needed, will be made available at Personnel and Business Office and Student Services during normal office hours and from USAO Security after hours.
  2. Face Covering Re-Use and Cleaning
    1. Disposable filtration surgical-style masks can be worn on campus for five consecutive days, or until soiled, whichever occurs first. (Those worn in research and clinical areas are subject to research and clinical department re-use policies.)
    2. Fabric face coverings should be washed and fully dried after each day’s wear. Appropriate cleaning of the face covering is the responsibility of the individual.
  3. University Facilities (Other than Housing)
    1. Students may remove face coverings when inside University facilities only (1) when alone in an enclosed room and (2) while participating in activities in which a face covering cannot practically be worn, such as eating and drinking or playing a wood/wind musical instrument as part of an academic assignment.
    2. Students, prospective students and guests are required to wear face coverings in common areas, hallways and offices during University tours.
  4. On-Campus Housing Facilities
    1. Students are not required to wear masks in their dorm rooms or apartments, but they are strongly encouraged to do so, particularly when others are present, unless they are participating in activities in which a face mask cannot practically be worn, such as eating and drinking, bathing or sleeping.
  5. Face coverings for Guests
    1. Students must inform their guests that each guest must wear a face covering that covers their nose and mouth while in University facilities, as required by this policy. Each guest should be advised to bring their own face covering.
  6. Accommodations for Medical Conditions
    1. If a student indicates compliance with this Face Covering for Students policy is not possible due to medical reasons, the student should be referred to Student Services or Disability Services

IV. Visitors, Vendors, and Contractors

  1. Face Covering for Visitors, Vendors and Contractors
    1. Visitors, vendors and contractors must wear face coverings on campus and should be asked to bring their own. The University will make surgical-style masks available to visitors, vendors and contractors who do not provide their own approved face covering. Masks may be obtained at the Personnel and Business Office or after normal business hours by contacting USAO Security at 405-222-8066.
    2. Guests are required to wear a face covering in common areas, hallways and offices during University tours.

V. Special Events and Athletic Sporting Events

  1. Face covering requirements for special events and athletic sporting events will be determined by the University administration prior to the date of the event and will be based on factors including location and size of event, current COVID-19 data, and advice of public health and medical experts.

  2. If an employee or student employee indicates compliance is not possible due to medical reasons, the individual should be referred to Personnel and Business Office to request accommodations on the basis of disability. Students (and student employees seeking accommodations on the basis of disability outside of a University work environment) should be referred to the Student Services Office.
