The Accent

The Accent is an on-going, contemporary publication designed by students for students. The Accent was originally launched in 2012 by former USAO professor Dr. Meagan Rodgers and a dedicated group of students as an initiative from the office of the Vice President of Academic Affairs to showcase the literary and artistic talents of USAO students. From the beginning, The Accent has proven to be an inclusive space for aspiring artists of all disciplines to display their work in a competitive environment. Under the new direction of Dr. Tonnia L. Anderson, The Accent is becoming more community-oriented via events like poetry slams and other live readings. Building a stronger USAO community through the Arts is top priority for the publication. Through these efforts, we hope to provide students with an exciting venue to present their creative voices.

While Covid -19 health concerns and social distancing measures stopped us from being able to celebrate together in person, The Accent would like to recognize the following seniors for their contributions to our publication:

Emily Rand with Slime Poem and A Professor’s Lament

Andreanna Turner with Cast Away: The Coma

Katharine Coley with His Queen

Summer Laurick with Invocation, Inbetween, and New Friends

Baylee Bozarth with Knitting in a Round

Bailey Johnson with Highland and Minnie Bear

Zoe Korn with Gathering Venus and Cosmic Girl

Araina Leatherock with Etre Seul and Interim Pleasure

Congratulations, Drovers! While things seem uncertain right now, we’re certain you will persevere and conquer everything you put your minds to! Nothing we can say will really make up for what has happened in your final year at USAO but the Accent team would like to say thank you for supporting the arts while here at USAO, and we hope that the pieces you submitted to The Accent will remind you of all of your amazing accomplishments. Congratulations on graduating, we cannot wait to see the things you will accomplish and the places that you will go.
