USAO offers my degree! Only two universities in the state offer a degree in Deaf Education. But USAO offers so much more than just my desired major; USAO has brought me into contact with all kinds of people from all over the world, provided me with life experiences everywhere from social to work, and given me a personal education that you just do not get at a larger university. –Jake Alexander/Yukon,OK
Deaf education teacher preparation at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma was established in 1945 and is the second oldest such program west of the Mississippi River.
The Division of Education and Speech Language Pathology offers a bachelor of science degree in education of the deaf. Graduates of the program are employed in a wide variety of educational settings, including public school programs, residential schools and charter and private schools for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. USAO’s education of the deaf program prepares teachers to provide appropriate and effective educational opportunities to students that are deaf or hard of hearing from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. Graduates who have completed the program meet the requirements set forth by the Office of Educational Quality and Accountability and are eligible for certification from the Oklahoma State Department of Education as well as the Council on Education of the Deaf.
There has never been a better time to enroll in a deaf education program. There is a nationwide shortage of educators for students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing. Graduates in this field are in high demand and have many employment options available to them. Additionally, teachers in special education fields are compensated often at a higher rate than other teaching professionals.
USAO’s deaf education curriculum includes coursework from the liberal arts, professional education and education of the deaf areas. Students also select an area of specialization, such as early childhood education, elementary education or a secondary subject matter. This broad-based, interdisciplinary curriculum enables students to develop a breadth of knowledge and skills that will prepare them to be effective educators.
