Dear Younger Me
by Kitty Lancaster
Dear younger me,
Why? Why would you choose those people to be your friends? Because they think like me, do they not? You don't know.
Why? Why would you choose to put that boy above all else, including yourself? Because he loves me, does he not? You don't know.
Why? Why would you grab the reins and leave everyone in the dust, forsaking all advice and warnings? Because it is my life, is it not? You don't know.
Why? Why would you choose to pump your body full of toxins instead of knowledge? To escape, should I not?
To escape what? These feelings of misunderstanding, loneliness, confusion, helplessness, hopelessness and pointlessness. Now you know.
What? What do I now know? Now you know that you don't know.
You don't know what you think, you don't know what love is, you don't know how to live your life, and you don't know that knowledge is the escape from those feelings of confusion and hopelessness.
We only know now because we didn't know then, so thank you Younger Me for not knowing because without your ignorance I would not exist.
