Annie Rebecca Minshew Gillis Scholarship
The estate of Lois Gillis Hall established this scholarship in memory of Hall’s mother. The scholarship is for a student majoring in English.
Hall was married to Dr. John Angus Gillis. They lived in Buda, Texas. In 1902 the family moved to Frederick, OK, when that area opened for settlement.
Her daughter Lois was born Dec. 22, 1896 and lived to be almost 109 years old. She schooled Lois at home until the fifth grade.
During World War I, while her husband served in the Army Medical Corps, Gillis moved the family to Chickasha so Lois could attend OCW. She was determined that her daughters receive a college education. Her younger daughter attended OCW’s prepatory school at the same time.
The two sisters and their mother found a home in Chickasha, but returned to Frederick on the weekends. The girls traveled to the college each day by streetcar, carrying lunches they would eat with the other “town girls” while sitting on the south steps of the Administration Building. The younger sister died during her freshman year at OCW in 1918. Gills passed away in 1961.
