Cecil and Norma Lea Drake Sanderson Scholarship
The Cecil and Norma Lea Drake Sanderson Scholarship was established to honor their alma mater. It is awarded to students based on financial need.
Norma Lea Drake Sanderson graduated from OCW in 1953. Her husband Cecil was from Chickasha and was among the first class of male day students allowed to attend OCW.
Norma received her degree in elementary education. She taught in New Mexico and Nebraska while Cecil served in the U.S. Air Force at bases throughout the world. Upon his retirement, they moved to Binger, Oklahoma. Norma taught school at both Binger and Eakly Elementary Schools and retired in 1991.
Cecil held a bachelor’s degree from the University of Omaha and masters degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. He retired in 1973 after serving 21 years in the Air Force as a hospital administrator. Throughout his military career, there were many raised eyebrows and chuckles when it was discovered that his college transcript included credits from the Oklahoma College for Women.
